Mapping Chronology
Map Collection Description
The collection is of mapping in the Santa Barbara area mainly from the early 1900's to the 1960’s. Their are several late 19th century maps consisting of several Blueprints and Original Linens. The main body of the collection consists of original ink on linen and ink and pencil on vellum from 1916 to 1965. The surveys were prepared by local surveyors, Cook Wyatt Moore, George Miller, Archie Cook, Edmond Pew Esq., W. Phelen, with prints and hard copies by F.F. Flournoy and George Miller.
The surveys and mapping dated from the 1900's to the 1940's were prepared on Linen Drafting Cloth using Ink.
The surveys and mapping dated from the 1940's to1960's were prepared on Vellum using Ink and Pencil.
The economy in the 1920's is reflected in the frequency and amount of surveying and mapping conducted at that time in this area. Many of the maps in the collection are dated between 1920 and 1930. Hope Ranch Subdivision was created in 1925 which original Subdivision Map Sheets are part of the collection. Numerous property surveys were conducted in Montecito, Hope Ranch and Santa Barbara reflecting the pace of development in the Santa Barbara coastal area. The maps include Planning, Topographic and Boundary surveys in the City of Santa Barbara, Hope Ranch, Goleta and Montecito.
The maps chronicle the transition of land ownership from Hispanic owned lands of local families Ortega, Cota, Pico, Dominquiz, Guiterez around 1871 to land owned by prominent land owners, developers, lawyers and industrialists Dryfus, Spalding, Skofield, Shieffield, Doheny, Garvin, Wright, Price, Ashley, Moore, Fithian, Chase (Hope Ranch Subdivision), Hill and Ballard these owners are responsible for the continued early development of the Santa Barbara area.
The early survey map titles were referenced by land owners names at the time of the survey and crossed referenced to land descriptions such as the Ranchos, The Outside Pueblo Lands and Section lands. These older surveys and mapping were prepared on Linen cloth with ink during the late 1800’s to the 1940’s. Later surveys referenced recorded documents and map references.

Maps in the collection are original mapping prepared with ink on linen and ink and pencil on vellum.
George Miller L.S. became associated with Penfield and Smith in the 1940’s and continued with P&S until his retirement in the 60’s and is responsible for some of the mapping in the collection. Wallace Penfield was County Engineer in the 1940's and Started Penfield and Smith in 1946 many of the vellums were prepared by Penfield and Smith.
The vellum surveys reflect more development and planning type maps Preliminary Tentative Maps along with Topographic and Boundary surveys in the Santa Barbara area dated from 1946 to 1965.
